Lead contamination in tap water
Update: Letter to parents from the Board of Trustees 19 July 2021
School notice February 2021
The Board shares the community’s concerns about the lead contamination of our drinking water. This is an unsettling time for our students and the community. We support the efforts of Dunedin City Council and other public authorities in finding the source of the contamination.
Our students’ health is our priority. The School is following advice from Southern Public Health and the Dunedin City Council. Tankered drinking water has been supplied by the Dunedin City Council for students, staff and visitors. Our vegetable garden is watered from a 5000 litre rainwater tank, donated by the Trillion Trek, and students also use that rainwater for waterplay. While students have been disappointed by the precautionary closure of the Moana Gow Pool, the School has organised alternatives – including surf lessons from Esplanade Surf School.
While drinking water contamination is never welcomed, it has showcased how resilient our School is. The Board is proud at how well our students and staff have adapted to this incident, and we hope it is resolved soon.
The Karitane School Board of Trustees - February 2021
Update 1 December 2020
The children at Karitāne School have a whole new play area to explore after parents and community members rebuilt the play equipment that they transported from Flagswamp School when it closed earlier this year. The flying fox, monkey bars and slide have been incorporated into a new fort area under the trees. The new play equipment is the first of several construction projects in progress at the school. Currently a new toilet block and classroom refit project is underway and in the new year construction will start on a community bike park in the school paddock beside Karitāne beach.
Our Labour weekend book sale raised $5500 to help in these projects - a huge thank you to the community for the support.
This term, tamariki have completed their Source to Sea project, ki uta, ki tai, taking a close look at the Waikouaiti River. They found the source of our local awa, monitored water quality and looked at what was living in our river. They found out about traditional Maori food gathering sites and ended up giving our river a rating based on their scientific investigations - a C+. A Masterchef competition has produced a new cookbook, the touch rugby team has had some really great games and the popular weekly swimming for all students at Moana Gow pool will continue in the new year.
The whole school is very excited to be going to Camp Columba this week!
We hope you can join us on 10 December for the Karitāne Community Carols at the Karitāne hall at 7pm.
